Henry Long 2025 Class-Elected Commencement Speech

I love volleyball (intramural team?), K-Pop (any Carats?), Greco-Roman mythology, books, blind boxes, and creative mediums like crochet, stamp carving, and painting! Fostering community motivates me as a Romero Success Coach, CPB’s Vice-President of Creative Programming, and as Club Soda’s Co-President! For fun, I love trying new crafting skills — sewing and crocheting are my current favorites. Outside of basketball, I love hanging out with friends, playing video games and board games, and spending time outdoors. Basketball is a passion of mine, and I love watching it both at the college level and in the NBA (especially when Kevin Durant is playing). I’m an Economics and Finance major with a sequence in Data Science here at CMC.

Bill Kristol Says He Would Vote For Zohran Mamdani for New York City Mayor

But I can promise that I can help lead that effort, day in and day out, to forge the kind of class WE want to see. And I witnessed people from cultures across the globe who didn’t just coexist but thrived together. I do it because growing up in Hawai’i, I was surrounded by other people of color. Specifically, I’m interested in how, as FYCP, I can develop virtual events and represent our class’ needs with an eye towards sustainability, mental health, and inclusion.

“It’s not a ‘perhaps,’” they decisively rebutted, “America hates women so much, they’d rather have a rapist as the president than a woman of color.” A tense, uncomfortable silence fell over the class. I believe that Donald Trump lacks the character to be president and that his victory will severely harm America’s civic culture and international reputation. “The capstone is unique in the sense that it offers students a taste of working with an external client on a real-world program and soft skills, such as proper presentation, in addition to analysis skills,” said Batta in an exclusive interview with the Forum. In the capstone, teams of four students engage in a data-analysis project for organizations in the public and private sectors. In 2018, George Roberts ‘66 P’93 donated $25 million to expand data science education and computing education. To fulfill the capstone requirement, the major would also require students to participate in a clinic in addition to completing a thesis.

It’s impressive when first-year students step out of their comfort zones, especially by doing things such as running for class president! I’m an economics-accounting major, but in my free time, I love spending time outdoors, reading books, and playing or watching various sports. Addressing that sentiment—in a moment of rare optimism for the night—Professor Taw encouraged students to still pursue such work in the short term and urged them to learn how the system works so they can effect meaningful change later in their careers. During the Q&A portion of the discussion, students conveyed a general sense of unease regarding how a second Trump presidency will impact America’s standing in the world—from its credibility amongst allies to its posture toward international law and human rights.

  • In terms of the differences between the data science major and sequence, Uvin believes that “the major is heavy on math, statistics, and probability.
  • CMC students deem the new data science major as “very admirable and a necessary step for CMC to remain a leading national liberal arts college,” according to David Roman ‘22, a current public policy major with a data science sequence.
  • In my free time, I love listening to music, watching slime videos on Instagram, or taking ill-timed 0.5x photos of my best buds.
  • On campus, I’m involved in APAM and the president of the Alexander Hamilton Society; I’ve worked for the Keck Center as well.

In response to such concerns, Mark Huber, Professor of Mathematics and Statistics, explained that CMC is intentionally constructing the data science major to distinguish it from the computer science major. To determine the major requirements, the faculty committee looked at data science majors at other universities, considered CMC’s resources in statistics, math, and computer science, and examined the guidelines set by the American Statistical Association for data science majors. With plans to hire new professors specializing in data science, CMC currently has the faculty and resources needed to launch a data science major. Lately I’ve found myself thinking about how our class functions, and how us students can build each other up.

U.S. Foreign Policy Outlook After the 2024 Election

As a first-generation, low-income student, I understand the numerous challenges that come with college, even when it’s virtual. As a transfer student, I am so excited to get to know my grade (and everyone on campus) even better as one of the senior apartment RAs. In my free time, I love to go to the beach, thrift, birdwatch, and of course hang out with friends and meet new people! I’m always up for a hoops conversation, so feel free to come talk to me anytime!

” was a common sentiment from students, many of whom are planning to work in government agencies, the foreign service, or IR-related fields, and were disheartened by what Trump’s win means for U.S. foreign policy. Indeed, in answering student questions, many of the professors noted that several of Trump’s policies will be influenced by the people he surrounds himself with in his cabinet and executive agencies. Many students and faculty expressed concern that U.S. alliances will increasingly depend on personal relations with Trump and what other countries can offer, rather than longer-term U.S. strategic considerations.

Now, please join me in giving a warm welcome to our stellar senior class president, who has done so much for our class this year, Tori Williams! This breath, however shallow it may be, inspires a hunger for the heavenly, a thirst for the transcendent, and a recognition of our incompleteness and ignorance. I love watching movies, hanging out with my friends, traveling, and trying out new foods. I studied abroad in Milan during the spring semester of my junior year and had the time of my life traveling around Europe.

Introducing the 2025-26 RAs!

My campaign values are community and accountability. I’m from the Bay Area, but I’m itching to be on campus with you all in Claremont. I want to represent the whole class and your ideas, dreams, and wishes. More accessible virtual events to accommodate people from all over the world. I have so many ideas for us to connect during this time. I also hope to highlight the diversity that makes our class so great, by spotlighting groups like Mi Gente, BSU, SAGA, APAM and more!

The committee, which consists of professors from various departments, has proposed a 12 course major with classes in math, statistics, probability, computer science, and ethics. I think if it had been the first round, I would’ve voted for someone else and maybe wouldn’t have even ranked Mamdani and would’ve had other people who were more centrist, liberal types. I’ve loved getting to know you all through classes, group chats, and Zoom calls, and so I’d love to represent you all as your first year Class President. If you’re having issues handling hardships this pandemic brings and being a full-time student, I’ll be there to help you gain access to whatever support you need. The main reason I think I’m the best candidate is that I’ll be a representative of the class just as much as I’ll be a president of the class. I’m from Syosset, New York, I love animal crackers and cake, I have a dog named Shadow, and I work at Starbucks.

In my free time, I love to thrift, listen to music, read, and gab for hours with my friends. In my free time, I love playing any kind of sport (especially cornhole, pickleball, and volleyball), dominating board games (Settlers of Catan), or doing anything involving the outdoors. One of the things I love most about CMC is the many wonderful opportunities and the sense of community. I am from Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi, studying Environmental Analysis on the Science track with a sequence in Asian American Studies. Data Science is my major, but I really love cybersecurity. One of my favorite things about CMC is the tight-knit, vibrant community, and as an RA, I’m excited to help keep that spirit of support and fun alive!

Can’t wait to build a great community in Auen this year. I also enjoy playing intramural dodgeball, watching baseball (Go Dodgers!), playing video games (most are made by a small indie company called Riot), and eating most of my meals at Collins. When I’m not grinding on schoolwork, I love to play pickleball, swim, and work out.

Professor Jessica Zarkin, who teaches courses on Mexican and Latin American politics, noted that Trump would likely use the threat of tariffs as a bargaining chip with Mexico to ensure cooperation on stricter border policies. In a similar vein, Professor Jennifer Taw, Chair of the IR program, expressed concern that Trump—alongside Israel—may prosecute a war with Iran before Iran acquires nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, Minxin Pei, Tom and Margot Pritzker ’72 Professor of Government and George R. Roberts Fellow, an expert on China, warned of rising Sino-American tension and the potential for a crisis over Taiwan under a Trump Administration that will pursue protectionist and hawkish policies.

I am excited to meet and talk with everyone more! I’m beyond excited to help build a community at Apartments that is friendly, inclusive, supportive and fun, and have a great year together! Let’s yap anytime, anywhere, about whatever you want.

Ideally, students majoring in data science and computer science will cmc markets review participate together in clinic projects during their junior year. Many CMC students were hoping that the data science major would provide more access to computer science courses, which have become increasingly difficult to enroll in at Harvey Mudd College. “The data science major will allow students to be a player, an expert in data science,” said Peter Uvin, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty, to stress the distinctive purposes the data science major would serve. I truly love giving back to the community that has shaped so much of my early young adult life and hope to be both a guide and a friend to incoming and returning students here on campus.

Because of this, there are some concerns about the major’s emphasis on math and statistics and lack of offerings in computer science. They’re good people who could work for him though, in New York. And so people—I do think the right’s reaction to Mamdani has been a little hysterical. And I also just think, practically speaking, New York is a huge city. So now they’re rallying to Cuomo with some of them, but I don’t have that much sympathy for that.
